Chad Racing – Dijon BTCS Rounds 3 & 4
With both the European FIA GT3 Championship and the Belgian Touring Car Series on the calendar, Chad Racing had a busy first weekend of May.
The BTCS teams headed for Dijon in France for their second meeting of the year, with – business as usual – two meeting of 90 minutes. Chad has entered three Kia ProCee’d this year in the Belgian series; one for the pop band brothers Koen and Kris Wauters, one for Werner Moonens and Jerome Thiry and one for the British-Belgian pairing Iain Dockerill and Philippe Stéveny.
In Dijon Chad Racing again scored a pole position and a podium and, after the French meeting, Stéveny and Dockerill are now third in the overall standings of the Belgian Touring Car Series.
In difficult conditions, Jerome Thiry set down fastest time during the sole qualifying session of the weekend. “Indeed, we score yet another success with Kia”, was his delighted reaction. “It’s the only pole of the weekend as the second qualifying session has been cancelled, as right after our timed session a VW Fun Cup lost all its gasoil on the track and the cleaning will take too much time…”
The heroes of race 1 of the BTCS weekend in Dijon were without any doubt Koen and Kris Wauters. The popular pop artists started down the grid, but after a tremendous come back they finished second overall, only one minute behind the winning BMW. With Stéveny-Dockerill in fourth and Thiry-Moonens in sixth position, Chad Racing put down a stunning performance in this first race of the weekend.
“If we would have had a standing start, I might have been even closer”, said Koen Wauters after the race. “In a rolling start it’s just more difficult to overtake a lot of cars in the first meters, but anyway, I’m very happy with the result.”
The second race turned out to be a more difficult one for the British team representing the Korean brand. In wet conditions, Stéveny-Dockerill scored another fourth spot, rewarded by a strong third position in the overall championship standings.
But both Koen and Kris Wauters and Jerome Thiry and Werner Moonens encountered technical problems – a starter engine issue prevented the Blue Kia from finishing higher than 11th, while Moonens and Thiry retired with an engine problem.
Moonens and Thiry are now fourth in the BTCS standings, one place behind Dockerill and Stéveny.
The next BTCS is race is the classic 12 Hours of Spa on the 5th of June.
